This breach affects 12,120 consumers to include 77 Wisconsin residents. Those affected should have received a letter offering credit monitoring services for one year free.

On September 18, 2008, the Wisconsin Dept. of Justice was notified by ChoicePoint of a security breach.  The breach occurred at the Coral Gables City Attorney’s office in Florida.  The Coral Springs City Attorney’s office has access to ChoicePoint’s AutoTrack product, which provides full SSNs for investigatory purposes.

Details

An estimated 2 million mortgage customers are affected by this breach. Those affected are receiving notification letters this week. CountryWide Letter example

The breach occurred over a period of two years and was initiated by an employee who sold the personal information of consumers to an outside source. The employee has been terminated and arrested for the theft.

Countrywide is offering 2 years of credit monitoring through Experian for free to those affected.

Bank of New York (BNY) Mellon – two divisions  Shareowner Services and Working Capital Solutions

Who’s affected
Details

The number of consumers affected is known to be 12 million or more. BNY Mellon reported backup tapes stolen from one of their facilities. The original number affected was 4 million, however; as of September 2 the number is higher.

Clients of both divisions of BNY Mellon were affected involving an undetermined amount of records lost. An initial investigation indicates approximately 270,000 individuals and 409 institutions were involved in the Shareowner Services breach alone. It’s expected to reach over 4 million individuals affected.

Shareowner Services – In late February back up tapes contained in a box were noticed missing. An investigation determined who was affected. Those affected received letters and free credit monitoring for a year.

Working Capital Solutions – In late April back-up tapes were lost while in transport to a Pittsburgh facility. Those affected received letters and free credit monitoring for a year.

Letters are being sent to those affected and may indicate accounts with Disney, Honda, Chase, JP Morgan and Kodak.
Credit monitoring is offered free for 24 moths to those affected and to only those receiving letters. Contact numbers for BNY Mellon are (877)278-3461 or (877)278-3464 to receive your activation code. This information is provided to you so that you can confirm the letter you received is authentic.
