An estimated 160,000 online bill paying consumers may have been affected. Notification was sent to approximately 5 million consumers that may have a relationship with CheckFree as a bill paying agent. Letters or emails have been sent from various banks and vendors. The notification letter offers 2 years of free monitoring services. |
During a nine hour period on 12/2 starting at approximately 12:30 am someone was able to change the domain name system (DNS) servers to point CheckFree site visitors to an internet address in the Ukraine. CheckFree noticed slower traffic and shut the site down to investigate. Anyone logging on during the time in question may have been directed to a blank screen that attempted to download malware to gain access to user names and passwords. The FBI is investigating the incident. CheckFree maintains that personal information was not accessed on their site as a result of this incident.
