Governor Jim Doyle has proclaimed October 2008 “National Cyber Security Awareness Month.”

The Fifth Annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month is a collective effort among the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, the National Cyber Security Division and the National Cyber Security Alliance to raise cyber security awareness nationwide and empower citizens, businesses, government and schools to improve their cyber security preparedness and help promote a safe Internet experience.

As part of the 2008 National Cyber Security Awareness Campaign, a number of activities are underway in recognition of Awareness Month, including the following:

You will notice posters throughout the building during the month of October that reminds us “Cyber Security – It’s Up 2 U”. Brochures that offer information on Phishing, Identity Theft and Protecting Children Online will be available in the kitchenette areas on each floor.

Phishing is the term that is used when criminals try to obtain information through electronic methods, without you being aware that it is occurring. You can learn how to avoid Phishing attempts by online criminals by attending a Brown Bag session I will be giving on October 2, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. in the Yahara, 101 E. Wilson.

Did you know that 1 in 25 children each year receive an online solicitation where the solicitor tries to make offline contact? A Brown Bag session will be held on October 14, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. in room 4B, 101 E Wilson. Tracy Rokicki will discuss the risks associated with children accessing the Internet, and steps to take to reduce those risks.

The Office of Security invited 4th and 5th graders in Wisconsin to participate in Wisconsin’s Cyber Security Awareness poster contest. Students are creating artwork depicting various internet safety topics. The top 3 Wisconsin entries will be submitted to a national poster contest, where the top 12 posters from participating states will be included in a Cyber Security Awareness calendar sent to all 50 states.

If you would like to view poster contest artwork, or download brochures, posters or a calendar filled with cyber security tips for kids, check out the DET Security website:
